Flying School
The Air Activities Flying School offers Scouts, Guides, other Youth Groups and Leaders the opportunity to learn to fly.
Over the last 35 years the School has trained many of Australia's young QANTAS, Airforce and professional pilots, as well as Leaders seeking to extend their horizons and take on the experience of flying.
Because the Air Activities Centre is a volunteer, not for profit organisation, training is conducted by volunteer professional flying instructors appointed by Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

How do I get Started?
Step 1. Do your Homework
a) How long does it take to get a licence?
The Camden Air Activities Centre operates on weekends and some weekdays upon request. It takes about 50 hours training to obtain a Private Pilot Licence.
In addition, you will need to take theory courses.
b) What sort of medical do I need?
Before your student licence is issued, you must undergo a medical examination by a medical examiner, which will grant you a Class 2 medical certificate.
If you are interested in obtaining a Commercial Licence, then a Class 1 medical will be required. The Class 2 examination is basically a general physical check-up.
c) Can I go to any doctor for my medical?
No, you must attend a CASA approved medical practitioner. On completion of the medical examination, the results are sent to the CASA Medical Branch for the issue of a Medical Certificate.

d) Is there an age limit for a pilot licence?
There is no age restriction on when you can commence your flying lessons, but you must have reached 16 years of age before you can obtain a Student Licence and undertake your first Solo flight. You must be at least 17 years old before you can achieve the Private Pilots Licence and 18 to hold a Commercial Pilot Licence.
Step 2 Learning to Fly
a) Trial Instructional Flight
The Trial Instructional Flight provides prospective students the opportunity to see how it feels to be a pilot and help decide if flying is for you.
During this 30-minute lesson the instructor will guide you through the pre-flight inspection, and will explain how the aircraft's controls and instruments work. If you feel comfortable, you will actually do most of the flying yourself. Book today.
b) Student Pilot Licence
If you decide flying is for YOU the next step is to become a student pilot. Simply complete the application for a Student Pilot Licence, pass the aviation medical and take to the skies with your instructor.
Your instructor will lead you through the process of obtaining your Student Pilot Licence:
-The excitement of being in control of an aircraft. -The challenge of 'going solo' (no instructor with you in the circuit). -Fly family and friends within the training area.
c) Private Pilot Licence
As a Student Pilot, your aim will be to gain a Private Pilots Licence. This will entail training for the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT) and Private Pilot Licence (PPL) Navigation Training. The GFPT allows you to carry passengers in the local training and circuit area and when you have passed the navigation training you have the freedom to fly anywhere in Australia in good weather and in daylight hours!
Having gained your GFPT and wanting to fly around Australia, you will need to pass the PPL examination. This includes:
-Navigation -Meteorology -Flight Rules & Procedures -Aeroplane Operational Procedures
The navigation flying training syllabus comprises seven (7) flying exercises. These are designed to teach the student to navigate via visual reference to the ground and apply appropriate air navigation rules and procedures. This involves around 22 hours of flying time in a Cessna 172.
The PPL allows you to enjoy:
-Organise weekend flying trips throughout NSW -Plan your dream top end flying adventure with family & friends -Start training to become an Air Activities Flying Leader -Gain further experience with other flying members
d) Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
After achieving the PPL, you may want to continue your training to become a commercial pilot. We encourage you to discuss the CPL with your instructor. |
