Australia Day Honours 2018

Congratulations to Bob Baker, and Colleen Godsell, on their appointment as Members of the Order of Australia. Also, Philippa Lovely has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

Bob Baker AM is recognised for his “significant service to youth, particularly through leadership roles with Scouts, and to the sport of Karting as an administrator and mentor”.

Bob joined Scouts NSW in Tumbarumba in 1951 as a youth member, and became a Group Committee Member in North Strathfield in 1975 after his son joined the Movement. He later became Assistant Scout Leader, Group Leader, and subsequently District Commissioner of Concord District. This was followed by appointments as Assistant Area Commissioner (Special Projects) Region Leader (Adult Training and Development) and Region Commissioner (Administration).

In 2000 Bob was appointed as Deputy Chief Commissioner, and subsequently became Branch Executive Committee Chair. During this time, Bob led the important work for a new Branch Constitution which holds us in good stead today.

Bob was appointed Deputy Chief Commissioner (Major Events) in 2006, and oversaw our Centenary of Scouting Celebrations. the following year he was appointed Chief Director of the Australian Jamboree 2010 (AJ2010).

Bob currently serves as an Honorary Commissioner. In this capacity, he has provided valuable assistance to our Board and to the Chief Commissioner, with various projects.

Last year, Bob was recognised for his 40 years of service. He was also recognised with the Stan Bales Rover Service Award in 2009, and the Silver Kangaroo in the same year. We sincerely thank Bob for his exemplary and dedicated service to Scouts NSW.

Colleen Godsell AM is recognised for her “significant service to youth through Scouting, and through roles with educational historical preservation, indigenous tourism and social welfare groups”.

Colleen is the Chair of 1st Mosman 1908 Scout Group and has been a volunteer since 1990. Amongst her many services, Colleen secured substantial funds to refurbish the 1st Mosman Scout hall. She was presented with a Scouts Australia Award in 2007 for “Outstanding Service to Youth”. For her broader community work, Colleen was presented the NSW Police Outstanding Community Contribution Award in 2002, 2003 and 2004. She was also presented the Community Services Award, by the Rotary Club of Mosman, in 2005 and was a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Outstanding Community Volunteer Award in 2000. We thank Colleen for giving so much of herself to Scouts NSW.

Philippa Lovely OAM of Baulkham Hills was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the community through a range of organisations including Scouts.
