To apply for the Young Leader Development Program, you need to meet the minimum criteria:

  • Be a current member of Scouts NSW
  • Be between 17 years and 9 months to 29 years of age
  • Have a Working With Children Check
  • Have a National Police Check
  • Has not completed their Basic Leader Training
  • New members and current members are eligible to apply. However, please note, it is strongly suggested that Venturers who are sitting their HSC and attempting their Queen’s Scout award defer joining the program until after they have completed their HSC.

The Young Leader Development Program is a unique and rewarding scholarship program that offers unforgettable experiences and the opportunity to develop a new range of skills. The program gives current members and new members the chance to:

  • Attain a Certificate of Proficiency
  • Attain an optional Certificate III in Business
  • Attain an optional Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation
  • Become qualified in an Adventurous Activity of choice
  • Develop confidence and leadership skills
  • Develop team work and co-operation skills
  • Take on new experiences and adventures
  • Continue their Scouting journey and help support the next generation of Scouts

The Young Leader Development program requires participants to complete the program within a 12-month period. After completion, participants can choose to undertake further training to become an Adventurous Activity Leader.

Funding assistance will be provided for successful participants by their sponsor formation group. This will be in the form of:

  • Transportation costs to and from a residential course
  • All costs charged by the residential courses
  • Accommodation for all courses will be covered
  • Catering for all courses will be covered

You can receive Adventurous Activity Leader training in areas such as bush walking, water activities, alpine activities, rock and more.

A residential course is a weekend course that participants will attend collectively to gain necessary training skills. The number of residential courses that you will be required to attend depend on the Section they are undertaking training in.

New members will be assisted in finding a local Scout Group to belong to and for in-service training, after being accepted into the program.

The different types of qualifications you will receive depend on the level of training you undertake. The Young Leader Development Program offers you the opportunity to attain a Certificate in Adult Leadership in any Section, Certificate III in Business and a Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation for your choice of an Adventurous Activity. At the completion of Basic Training, participants can become an Adult Leader in Scouting.

Applicants can choose to undertake training in one of the five Sections:

  • Joey Scout Leader Training (5-8 year olds)
  • Cub Scout Leader Training (8-11 year olds)
  • Scout Leader Training (11-14 year olds)
  • Venturer Scout Leader Training (14-17 year olds)
