Meet our Youth Safe Advocates – Paula

Name: Paula Bourke

Role in Scouts: Group Leader

Day Job: Administration and Accounts Officer

Hobbies and Interests: Camping, fishing, hiking, reading

Favourite moment in Scouting: Having one of my Venturers achieve her Queen's Scout Award this year - the first in our Group since 2003.

What inspired you to work with youth members? Seeing how Scouts assisted my own children to grow independence, improve their teamwork and leadership skills.

What key thing has a youth member said to you that has stayed with you? "My teachers have told me since I started Scouts that my social skills have improved and that I am participating more in school activities."

Why did you become a Youth Safe Advocate? To ensure that all youth members feel safe at Scouting events and that they know they will be listened to.

Why is the Youth Safe Advocate scheme important for Scouts NSW? Promotion of inclusiveness within the Scouting movement and to reassure the youth members that they will be listened to and not judged.

What is the key message you would everyone to remember about the Youth Safe Advocate scheme? That the Youth have a right to feel safe, included and will be listened to in a non-judgmental way.
